This Civil Department was started in 1945 with basic equipment for Undergraduate Course and extended in 1971 for Post Graduate Course in Structural Engineering. From 1945, Civil Engineering Laboratory has been modified and updated several times. In addition to offices, classrooms, and laboratories, the building features a two-story, central crane bay for large-scale experimental research. There is a comprehensive machine shop that is capable of fabricating nearly any item required by faculty who are conducting research. In addition, researchers within Civil engineering Department at GCT have access to the resources of the Computing facilities.
The department’s structural research laboratory has a long history of excellence in large-scale experimental structural research. Over the years, research performed at the lab has contributed greatly to the state-of-the-art in Civil Engineering. The structural testing area of the laboratory is a versatile space with a two-story clear height that can be used to carry out a wide range of tests of building materials, components, structural assemblies, and models. It features a central, two-story crane bay with a strong floor along withTwo Loading Frames in addition to many miniature loading frames.
The Structural Engineering Laboratory is a hub of activity, with large-scale experimental testing research being conducted to develop new, resilient structural systems and innovative new approaches for rehabilitating the aging infrastructure. These experimental facilities are complemented by various funds through AICTE – MODROBS, Part – II Schemes along with state funds. The research is carried out on a wide range of topics in mechanics and numerical simulation of structures etc.
The structural engineering faculty also lead several laboratory facilities like Concrete Laboratory, Structural Dynamics Laboratory, Non-destructive Testing facilities along with virtual simulation procedures; that are revolutionizing structural engineering through experimentation, model-based simulation, and collaborative testing and consultancy activities.
The Environmental Engineering division was established in the year 1981 under the Department of Civil Engineering for imparting the students with the right environmental education. The department has extensive research works being carried out in the fields of solid waste management, waste water treatment, water quality monitoring and air quality monitoring. The Department has produced more than 30 PhDs and is carrying out consultancy services to Government and Private Bodies and is instrumental in generating more internal revenue to the college.
The post graduate programme in Geotechnical Engineering was started during the year 2007 and the division is carrying out various research and consultancy projects in various areas of Geotechnical Engineering. The faculties in the division are active in many fields of geotechnical engineering including soil investigation for shallow and deep foundations, design of piles and foundation, retaining walls, excavations, dewatering, stabilisation, reinforced soil structures, pavement design and evaluation etc.
